Abstract
This essay focuses on the sensorial aspects in a variety of ritual actions carried out by the Wixaritari (Huichols). For instance, the use and management of certain colors, forms, plays of light and shadow, sounds, and temperatures are described in terms of the decisive role that they play in achieving the ritual efficacy of the ceremonial contexts described. Moreover, it is observed that on certain occasions, some sensorial modes can take on life or, following Gell (1998), acquire a certain degree of agency capable of manifesting the presence of living and dead beings and/or ancestor-gods. The different points of view that intervene in these ceremonial contexts and from which sensorial aspects are managed in order to produce efficacy are also interrogated. Thus, from a dynamic focus, based on the observation of concrete actions (not omitting the corresponding exegesis), and in which ritual actions are considered as creative processes, a first attempt at articulating ritual actions and sensory effects is developed within a wider horizon of analysis on the articulations between art and ritual. Ethnographic fragments observed in very different types of rituals practiced by the Huichols will be taken up: actions carried out by peyoteros during their pilgrimages, particularly in the zone of Wirikuta (in the high steppe of San Luis Potosí); ceremonies of Hikuri Neixa (Peyote Dance) and Tatei Neixa (Dance of Our Mothers or Drum Festival); Holy Week celebrations; and the corrida del alma (“chasing away of the soul”, a funerary ritual)References
