Current State of Ethnotourism Research: A Systematic Literature Review. (2024). Revista De El Colegio De San Luis, 14(25), 1-34. https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl142520241607

Abstract

Ethnotourism is an activity where visitors seek experiences in native communities, being a sustainable and respectful tourism towards ancestral peoples; however, its study has been limited in recent years. Therefore, this review article aims to analyze the thematic categories that guide research on ethnotourism in recent decades, exposing its current status, as well as future lines of research. To achieve this, a systematic literature review was conducted in the Scopus database, from 2000 to 2022. The process considered the stages of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA): identification, screening, eligibility and inclusion. Two types of analysis were performed: bibliometric and content analysis. The results revealed four thematic categories: a) elements of ethnotourism development, b) tourism segment, c) local development and, d) role of the host community. In conclusion, the tourism potential based on culture, customs and traditions, its impact on local development, the role of the host community and the perception of ethnic tourists are denoted.
