Abstract
This text proposes a historical review of the philosophical-academic approaches to the body, chronologically organizing the views on it and the progressive changes in the way of conceptualizing and working on it from the Social Sciences. The path invites a synthesis and reflection based on the existing bibliography, offering not only a historical vision of the ideas about the body (and the corporeal), but also contrasting the current lines of debate with each other. In this sense, the article contributes to the construction of a foundation and the provision of a temporary theoretical-methodological framework for those interested in body studies. Although the most recent approximations, heirs to what is exposed here, will be left out, the conclusion is that the body, in its current situation, is presented as a key element in the theories and explanatory models of sociocultural reality, the social agency and foundation of the self.
